If you have traveled internationally the past 2 months, you may have encountered them: health officers briefly pointing a thermometer gun at your forehead or watching as you go by to check for signs of a cough or difficulty breathing. Many countries are now watching arriving and departing air passengers who might suffer from the viral disease COVID-19; some require passengers to fill out health declarations. (Some also simply ban or quarantine those who have recently been in outbreak hot spots.)
Exit and entry screening may look reassuring, but experience with other diseases shows it’s exceedingly rare for screeners to detect infected passengers. Just last week, eight passengers who later tested positive for COVID-19 arrived in Shanghai from Italy and passed the airport screeners unnoticed, for example. And even if screeners do find the occasional case, it has almost no impact on the course of an outbreak.
“Ultimately, measures aimed at catching infections in travelers will only delay a local epidemic and not prevent it,” says Ben Cowling, an epidemiologist at the University of Hong Kong. “Codswallop” is one of those interesting words that might have been used by Supreme Court justice Anton Scalia in a dissenting opinion, or by conservative intellectual William F. Buckley in describing some liberal policy.
It’s a British expression that refers to words or ideas that are foolish or untrue, in other words, nonsense.
While codswallop is a good description of the entire Democrat agenda, today I will restrict its use to the hysteria surrounding the coronavirus outbreak, media fearmongering, and resulting public panic.
Big media is all about ratings, view, and clicks, hence their axiom, “If it bleeds, it leads.” A viral outbreak is the perfect story, on par with a missing Malaysian airliner or a celebrity football player named OJ on trial for murder.
The added bonus is that any negative news can be laid at the feet of a president loathed by the media, who just so happens to be running for reelection. The media is in full campaign mode, trying desperately to drag the carcass of one of their corpselike candidates across the presidential finish line.
Stoking fear over quarantines and supply chain disruptions have sent the stock market on a downward roller coaster ride. One of President Trump’s major achievements is the roaring economy. Taking the stock market down 25% or more may help the Democrats. But by the numbers, the economy is still roaring, bolstered by the February jobs report of 273,000 added jobs, more than expected, and record low 3.5% unemployment.
Speed is critical in the response to COVID-19. So why has the United States been so slow in its attempt to develop reliable diagnostic tests and use them widely?
The World Health Organization (WHO) has shipped testing kits to 57 countries. China had five commercial tests on the market 1 month ago and can now do up to 1.6 million tests a week; South Korea has tested 65,000 people so far. The U. S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in contrast, has done only 459 tests since the epidemic began. The rollout of a CDC-designed test kit to state and local labs has become a fiasco because it contained a faulty reagent. Labs around the country eager to test more suspected cases—and test them faster—have been unable to do so. No commercial or state labs have the approval to use their own tests.
In what is already an infamous snafu, CDC initially refused a request to test a patient in Northern California who turned out to be the first probable COVID19 case without known links to an infected person.-- excerpt, rest at link above --

Medical scientists are learning a great deal from the COVID-19 epidemic, and there are lessons for all of us. Perhaps the most compelling is the lesson that the best responses to any major health crisis cannot come from totalitarian governments.
China, which was ground zero for the coronavirus, has forcibly quarantined tens of millions of its people, lied about the disease’s spread and suffered the highest numbers of deaths. Its scientists are doing research, but there is no news about what they have done or what successes they may have achieved. The Xi Jinping regime will hide the news until there are major successes, if such ever occur.
The nation which has suffered the next most deaths, Iran, has similarly lied about the epidemic there. Its health system, to the extent it exists, is incapable of a significant response.
The coronavirus has spread to about 70 nations in Europe, the Middle East and sub-Saharan Africa. India expects a major outbreak. The disease can kill, but most people suffer no more than they would from a normal case of flu.
The only good thing about the coronavirus outbreak is the relative stability of the virus. Neither of its two identified strains apparently have (yet) mutated into a deadlier disease.

Toilet paper is suddenly a premium commodity in the United States. Bottled water purchases are being limited at grocery stores. The stock market is crashing. Millions of Americans are panicking. Why? Because the coronavirus blindsided us, right? No. It’s because mainstream media finally found a card they could play against President Trump that is actually sticking, for now.
Ironically, the card they discovered was out of his control. No action by President Trump could have prevented the Wuhan virus from spreading to the United States. He established a travel ban as soon as information out of China started looking dire, and lest we forget, he was lambasted for it by Democrats, mainstream media, and even the World Health Organization (WHO). But that hasn’t stopped them from sparking the unhinged panic surrounding the coronavirus because they believe this is the disaster that might actually take him down.
The Wuhan virus is not nearly as big of a deal as it’s being portrayed by the media. As the President Tweeted, it’s not at the same scale that the flu has become in recent years.
Imagine reacting to the coronavirus outbreak by hoping that the situation gets horrific enough to bring about the downfall of the Trump administration. Ever since the coronavirus outbreak hit the news cycle, progressive media has been using it as a political cudgel to slam the Trump administration while whipping the public into a frenzy.
But last Friday, MSNBC aired a segment in which host Nicole Wallace and Princeton professor Eddie Glaude attempted to paint the outbreak as President Trump’s “Hurricane Katrina.” But even worse, they seemed to hope that the deaths that result from the disease would lead to the president’s defeat in November.
“We talked about the business community finally not kind of sticking with Donald Trump,” Glaude said. “But this may be, and you know Nicole, I should mention this with a little trepidation, but this may be Donald Trump’s Katrina.”
