Houston’s fourth gun buyback collected more than all of the previous events, with over 1,400 firearms.
“Today’s gun buyback program was the most successful of all 4 with over 1400 guns collected,” said Mayor Sylvester Turner on Twitter. “Combined we have taken in more than 4,200 guns.”
The Houston Police Department posted the totals from the event on Twitter on Saturday afternoon.
In total, 1,446 firearms were collected, a noticeable increase from the 793 collected in February.
According to officials, the event collected 275 revolvers, 490 semi-automatic handguns, 228 shotguns, 265 hunting rifles and 188 semi-automatic rifles.
Turner and Harris County Precinct 1 Commissioner Rodney Ellis hosted the event Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at NRG Park’s yellow lot.
“We've now taken nearly 4k guns off of Harris County streets,” Ellis said on a Twitter post. “After today this should be the most successful local gun buyback program in history.”-- excerpt, rest at link above --
